In light of the blackout that recently swept across San Diego, we've created a list of must-have items for the inevitable next time that we're all stranded in the dark with nothing but a matchbook and half a Duraflame. Because sometimes, these things don't work:
On that note, sometimes this doesn't work either:
Either way, check out our list of must-have's for the next power outage to come your way:
- Flashlights – These are a must, and we don't think that needs any explanation. As an alternative, placing candles around the house could make for a cozy night at home.
-
Batteries – Having flashlights is great, but when the batteries are dead (which they probably are) it is important to have different types handy. Know what kind you need, and remember where you stashed them.
-
Camping Stove – Keeping one of these on hand means you're still able to cook your meals, which is particularly helpful if the blackout lasts for days on end. Don’t forget the propane!
-
Matches – We weren't joking about the matchbook. These things are essential for lighting candles, lanterns, stoves, etc.
-
Car Cell Phone Charger – Having a cell phone charger for the car will allow you to continue to charge your battery and have contact with the outside world (and get important news updates should you have internet capabilities).
-
Extra Gasoline – With the recent blackout, we saw gas stations shutting down. If you’re out of the many without gas, trust us, you won’t be having the best night.
-
Ice – Ice will keep your products cool for a short while, and can work wonders to cool you down should the next power outage coincide with a heatwave.
-
Canned food – Food and snacks that don’t require preparation or refrigeration can be lifesavers (just don't forget the non-electric can opener).
-
Radio – A device that plays music is useful if you don't want to sit around the dark in silence. Having your computer or iPod charged is a good idea!
-
Alcohol – For adults, that is. A little wine or beer on a dark candlelit night is always helpful when it comes to relaxing. If this is your thing, make sure you’re stocked up!
